Title tags that still earn clicks in 2026

Your title is fallback, crawler anchor and sometimes the SERP. A CMS that pastes the same one everywhere shows up late.

Google often ignores your title. That is not a reason to leave it sloppy. Crawlers read it. Social falls back to it. And if Google has no better line, it sits there in blue. An empty title is lazy. A 120-character title is an invite to be rewritten.

One tag per URL, in the head. Unique. Two landings titled “Welcome to Company” is noise. I aim for 30 to 60 characters. Longer gets cut or rewritten, and stuffing invites that. | Company | Home | 2026 after every line is not branding. It is ballast.

Intent first, brand last. Check your XML sitemap | Company beats a slogan. Put the keyword in if it fits. Otherwise leave it out. Write it as if someone will read it out loud. If you would not click it, nobody else will.

The dumbest thing I still see: after a plugin update every landing inherits the homepage title. Sometimes that sits for a week before anyone opens Search Console. Filters and pagination that inherit the same title, same story. If you scan at all, that is one of the first things I look at.

Google rewriting titles is normal. Your job is a clean fallback. Unique, short, intent first. The rest is hoping the SERP plays along, not another tool inventing “title scores”.
